Work out how the space will be used
Reception furniture makes a first impression on every visitor, even though only a handful of people sit on it each day. Appearance therefore earns a larger share of the budget than usage alone would justify. Our reception tables and seating are a good starting point for the front of house.
Breakout seating is the opposite. It is sat on all day, moved about and treated without much care, so choose it for durability and pick a hard-wearing fabric. Many offices need both kinds of area, so it helps to plan each one separately.
Sofas or modular systems
For a defined corner, the straightforward option is sofas and armchairs. Modular seating is assembled from units that link together, so you can line a wall, turn a corner neatly or create an island in the middle of an open floor.
With modular, plan the shape first and count the units second. The Mawsley system includes purpose-made 90 degree back and inner pieces that close its corners without gaps.
Somewhere to concentrate
When there is nowhere in the office for focused work, privacy booths and pods offer screening from sight and sound without building anything. Their tall backs block sight lines and noise together, which fixes a problem more desks never will. Place them near the desks they serve, or they tend to sit empty.
Keeping to one collection
Mixing ranges in one breakout area rarely works, because fabrics and proportions never quite agree and the mismatch looks accidental.
