Why fabric suits so many offices
Fabric feels warmer than mesh in a chilly building and gentler than leather when you first sit down. It comes in a broad spread of colours, so it can work with your decor instead of fighting it.
It is also forgiving. An unusual shade of fabric still looks intentional, whereas leather in the wrong tone stands out for all the wrong reasons.
What to check before you choose
- Abrasion resistance. Office upholstery is tested for how well it stands up to rubbing. Fabric meant for the home wears quickly on a busy floor, which is why the fabric chairs here are contract grade.
- Cleaning. Fabric holds marks more readily than leather. Near a canteen, a reception desk or anywhere coffee travels, a wipe-clean finish may be the better long-term buy.
- Where the chair will be used. For computer work through the day, browse fabric task chairs. For a manager's or director's room, look at fabric executive chairs. Meeting rooms and receptions are covered by our visitor and conference chairs.
When another material makes more sense
Fabric is not the answer everywhere. In a warm office, or for someone who runs hot, mesh office chairs let more air through. In a formal boardroom or a director's office, leather office chairs carry more presence. Those are the two situations worth budgeting differently for; at most other desks, fabric is a sound and sensible choice.
