Cable port top desks have openings cut into the worktop, letting leads fall through to a cable basket or floor box rather than hanging over the rear edge. Ports are the default top on our desks and the right pick for most Irish offices. Only choose something else if you have a particular reason to.
With no port, each lead has to loop over the back of the desk. That looks messy, keeps the desk from going tight to a wall and traps cables when someone pushes it back. A port shortens the cable run too, so there is no long tangle of slack picking up dust or tripping people.
Because a port sits in one set place, it works best where the power point is also fixed. If floor boxes may be relocated, or the layout changes regularly, a scalloped edge offers an opening along the full rear of the desk instead. In most offices a port still looks neater, since a scalloped cut-out is visible from behind.
The port takes cables through the worktop, but you still need a cable spine, tray or basket to carry them tidily to the wall, and these are separate items. Ordering them along with the desks is far simpler than adding them once the team has moved in. For routing inside the frame, see cable managed desks.
You can have a ported top on straight, corner and crescent desks with any of the leg options, and on Air sit-stand desks too. Start with straight desks or the full office desks range.
